As the final instalment of this years’ Powerade Never Give Up campaign goes to air, I’m contemplating embarking on my own little fitness challenge. There’s a crate of Powerade sitting in the boot of my car, daring me to put it to good use.
And after 4 inspirational days in Davos, Switzerland watching Ang, Trev and Reg prepare for the Swiss Alpine Challenge, it would appear that running to the bar or lifting an enormous glass of beer (it really was huge - and I am quite small) - doesn’t actually count as exercise!
Davos was by far the most breathtaking of all the NGU Challenge locations. I’ve been to the Alps numerous times, and while it is magical in the Winter, covered in glistening snow, it still took my breath away. Although much of that may have had something to do with the altitude, and a certain lack of fitness.
Like any shoot this one had its’ high and lows. The highs - not just because (sitting at over 5,000ft) it is the highest city in Europe, but it is simply stunning. The lows - getting up at 6am on Race Day to help local man Bruno and his wife to brand the course with Powerade signage. Lovely as they were, their limited English and my left over school German didn’t make for great conversation. And let’s face it, charades at 6am is not really my forte!
It did however give me a chance to glimpse the few parts of the course that were accessible by car. Although this did bring on a bout of altitude sickness, once the dizziness and nausea subsided, I felt like a bit of a wuss - considering the team would be running at higher, freezing altitudes.
Once the race kicked off and Bruno had finished the Powerade branding (I observed from the car, wearing 3 jackets and a pair of gardening gloves to offset the frostbite), I headed back to town for a spot of lunch, a little souvenir shopping, a cable car ride to the top of the mountains, took some photos, had a walk and a coffee, headed back to town, found a restaurant for dinner and all the while, poor Ang, Trev and Reg were running and running and running….
So to see them coming over the finish line all smiles and proudness (though Reg did blub like a baby), while I was complaining about my exhausting day was a bit embarrassing. Not to mention that they also managed to party to the wee hours. But hey, they had youth on their side and some fantastic support from Powerade.
And on that note, while I’ll never attempt a Mountain Marathon (I’ve left my 20’s behind - so under no illusion there), I am off to sign up to Bootcamp (yes I am going to pay someone to kick my ass into shape), with a little help from the aforementioned crate of Powerade. Now if I could just find a strong man to lift it out of my boot for me….
