It’s worrying to think that over the next few years Taxpayers face having to shell out more than €270m on carbon credits so that Ireland can ‘buy its way’ to meeting the Kyoto agreement on greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate change is a huge challenge facing us all. At McCann we’re making simple changes to help do our bit. Simple changes that have a bigger impact the more people join in. Things like unplugging your mobile phone charger when it’s not in use and not using boards to present creative work.

We’re also doing bigger stuff like avoiding flying whenever possible, we’ve removed all our bins and replaced them with recycling bins, so everyone now thinks about which bin to drop their rubbish into.

Last year we produced a 12 point guide, highlighting some simple changes we all can make that will benefit the planet. They’re listed in this short video we made internally. Take a look!

We also developed our own in-house recycling logos:

A Few Sobering Facts:

  • Flying from Dublin to Cork return emits approximately 100kg of CO2 per person just on that flight alone – That’s more than the average persons body weight measured in CO2. By comparison the same journey by train emits between 9 and 10 times less CO2 or about 10kg per person.
  • Ireland is currently the second worst in Europe in terms of CO2 emissions/capita.
  • CO2 emissions in Ireland, by 2012, will be more than 22.5pc above 1990 levels. This is almost twice the Kyoto target of 13pc.
  • Rising sea levels will result in tens to hundreds of millions more people flooded each year with warming of 3 or 4°C.
  • The melting or collapse of ice sheets would eventually threaten land which today is home to 1 in every 20 people.
  • Heat waves like that experienced in 2003 in Europe, when 35,000 people died and agricultural losses reached €15 billion, will be commonplace by the middle of the century.
